I started the day reading the story of Matariki (Maori New Year) which lead to making art with a Matariki theme. After drawing a ruler width border around the paper, they set about drawing their Matariki stars- templates were available, but many chose to draw their own stars. These were then painted with bright watercolours, including red in the border.
Next the children saw many examples of koru's (spirals) in a selection of books based on Maori myths and legends, then were given the task to design their own koru pattern that could be transfered onto a print block. The polystyrene printing blocks were then printed on top of the red borders.
The intention was for the children to colour the backgrounds, but this had to wait with the ink drying times. The art will be on display during our school art auction and then used as calendar art.
