Cat's in our neighbourhood by Amy B's GG

Carrie's lesson 6 yr olds

We started the day identifying Native NZ birds and went on to draw two birds. A discussion about the predators of birds, lead on to our next activity; drawing Lauren Burch inspired cats with bold bright patterns.
After this the children had painted a landscape fitting for their cat and birds, they cut out the drawings and glued them to the background.

Unfortunately we didn't have much time for the backgrounds as Small sticks hockey and a surprise whole school flash mob dance (for our leaving principal Perry) reduced our artday time.

Autumn leaves with Cecilia's GG

Carrie's lesson 5 yr olds

I had a wonderful day getting to know Cecilia's Guardian Group, with only 9 girls and 1 boy visiting for an hour.

We started the day doing observational drawings of Oak leaves and discussed the differences between evergreen and deciduous trees. Then we read 'Little Tree' by Loren Long, a lovely story about not letting go and growing!

Then it was time for the class to make their own tree using a combination of watercolour paints and relief printing with polystyrene blocks for the leaves. With so few children, we were able to do multi coloured prints and use a range of autumnal colours with great results.

We finished the day drawing stained glass window designs.

Birdhouses with Deanne's GG

Carrie's lesson 7-8 yr olds

We started with observational drawings of native birds that could be collaged into the composition later in the day. We were limited for time today as reading and maths were still included in the timetable.
Next was preparing a background of wax rubbings with blue/ yellow dye.
The third stage involved designing a bird house for their native bird, which was to sit in a tree. The designs ranged from basic box with various colours to houses with different levels and connecting slides!
The various elements were cut out, positioned and glued to the background.
The results looked great and everyone was pleased with their finished art.

Predator Robots M12

Gretchen's lesson with 7 and 8 year olds

The day was a little crazy, with several interruptions, reducing our art time to half a day. Still, it was an enjoyable day.

The children discussed how they could keep their own back gardens, predator free. Today's aim was to invent a robot that could help them with this task.

I had several photos of robots up around the room, including some the children already recognised...R2D2 and C3PO. We talked about components that are recognisable on most robots.

Observational drawing warm up

The children used vivid markers and water colour paint to make their robots. They added information stickers to their page and named their robots.
