Surreal rooms Jacqui and Jarryds GG

Carrie's lesson
Alice and I worked together with two classes (8-10 yr olds)

We introduced the students to Dali and Magritte, two well known Surrealists, looking at how they played with scale, distorted images and used humour.

The first challenge was to draw a room using one point perspective and include some furniture or windows. Some found this very hard, but with help from classmates and teachers, everyone succeeded and went on to either paint or colour with pencil.

The second challenge saw them looking through magazines for images that said something about themselves; likes, hobbies, heros, sports etc. After this they had to select and arrange the images in their rooms in an interesting way.

They certainly managed to incorporate humour into their work, many were very bizarre or funny!

At the start of the day, the class did observational drawings of Wandering Willy
(a problem weed in NZ) and the results were fantastic.
Here's a few that showed the 3D quality and had good attention to detail.
