Kiwifruit print project with Jacqui's GG






Carrie's lesson 9-10 yr olds

 The day started with observational drawings of kiwifruit that had been cut into thin slices, then from these, the children exaggerated, extended and simpified to create a design to be transfered onto a print block.



The next stage was to paint a background that could be printed onto. Some went with a colour scheme such as greens and yellows and others chose bright bold colours; there were references to Andy Warhol (who many of them know) Once these were dry, they used black printing ink to print their designs over the top.
















We finished the day with Oodles of doodles!

Printed performance outfits and colour wheel by Cecilia's GG


Carrie's lesson 5 yr olds

I had a wonderful day with the new entrant class and almost completed all the prints needed for a performance later in the year. 

The children were asked to fill a sheet with different types of koru (spirals)  after some ideas from me and visuals around the class. From these, they chose their best design to transfer onto a poly print block. Most of them managed to incorporate some koru shapes, and when printed black and red, were really effective

The second half of the day was spent talking about colour and the differences between primary and secondary colours. They did really well with their colour mixing attempts but not always in the right place on the wheel. They were very good at helping each other and reminding peers of the instructions. Ka pai!

Colour wheel painting with Gina W's GG

We talked about primary colours first and some of the children knew you couldn't make a primary. These were painted onto their colour wheel, leaving a space for the secondary colour. After a demonstration of colour mixing, the children had to make their own secondary colours from the primaries and fill the gaps, most had success with this task despite a few colours going in the wrong gap!





The next task was to write their name in large bubble writing, and colour with oil pastels using a range of primary and secondary colours.

After lunch we had A3 paper to fill with koru shapes (spirals) of all shapes and sizes. When they completed this, they chose their best designs to transfer onto a bookmark.

Koru exploration K7

5 and 6 year olds

The children have talked about Maori art and design in their class. They were knowledgeable about why they only used red, black and white in their art. They knew about the koru shape, which is what I focused on today.


They covered a page with as many different ways they could think of to make a koru. 


They made a huge koru which was a shape they could add colour or design to. 
Therefore not just a line.



They repeated the koru and filled it with torn red or black magazine pieces. 





They carried on to make repeating koru designs on strips of paper and a design they thought would look good on a Kapa Haka outfit. I forgot to photograph them. 😕







 I gave the children a piece of vinyl with an adhesive side. The cut out a koru shape and stuck it to a page.
