The children began by covering a small piece of paper with oil pastel. It had to be a very complete cover in order for the sgraffito to work. They painted black acrylic paint over the top. I added a little washing detergent to the paint so it wouldn't flake off.
While we were waiting for the paint to dry, the children trolled through magazines and cut out pictures of flowers.
The vases were sgraffitoed using kebab sticks, in patterns. The children glued the vase onto patterned paper and added the flowers. If there wasn't a stalk, they added one using ink.
