Crayon Etching V5

Gretchen's lesson

9 and 10 year olds.

The children began by drawing an observation of a native animal. I encouraged detail, variation of line and strong contrast...dark and light.

They prepared one half of an A3 folded page with layers of crayon, beginning with the lightest colour.
They had to do this thoroughly, or their etching would suffer.
They drew their observational drawing on the outside of the folded page (crayon layers on the inside.)This was marking into their wax crayon page and leaving a lovely line drawing next to the crayon page.

Once they had finished drawing over their picture, they opened out the A3 page. There was a line drawing into their wax page, which they used to recreate their picture by scratching away at the crayon with sticks.
