Aotearoa Calendar Stone V2

Carrie's lesson

I introduced the class to the Aztec sun/ calendar stone, we then brainstormed how we could use the idea to create an Aotearoa calendar stone using scruffito to reveal the designs. This was quite a tricky project with the use of a compass to draw the varying circles and there were challenges along the way the children had to overcome. Most of the class incorporated seasons, months and annual events into their design effectively, and had great results.

After drawing out the circles, the sections were then coloured with
brightly coloured oil pastels. The design needed to extend past the outer
circle so it could be seen after painting black acrylic. The children also made
a note of measurements before painting to help re-create the original circles and lines.
