Christmas Silhouettes R7

6 and 7 year olds.

We began the day as we always do, with an observational drawing. The gum tree leaves are a terrific subject choice because they are irregular and have tiny details that are great for the kids to observe. They are not white, therefore the drawings have to be covered in a tone. Tricky for some.

Checking out their class mates drawings.

The subject was Christmas so we brainstormed some images that represent Christmas. We talked about silhouettes. They had a few tries at making a silhouette of a Christmas image. Once they had settled on a good one, they made a big cutout of it. They traced around it on a large piece of paper. They ruled six lines through their work.

Into the shapes they had created around their silhouette, they drew blue and green patterns (cold colours) in wax crayon. They put dye over this.

Inside the silhouette, they patterned the created shapes in warm colours.
