I have based todays lesson around Nigel Brown's art. He is a well known NZ artist. His website is very comprehensive. It also has some excellent examples of his work.
The children choose a living thing (I had photographs of living things on hand) and they asked themselves why it was special to them. To focus them on their chosen subject, I asked them to make an observational drawing of it. I was very impressed at their ability.
They wrote down text that related to their choice. They refined it and wrote it around the page in Nigel's style.
We talked about colour combinations and types and size of the text.
They will be working on these next time, This couldn't be rushed. It's very skilful work.
