Laurel Burch M13

7 and 8 year olds

Today we looked at Laurel Burch's artwork. We had a discussion about what was significant about her work.

Things like colour combinations, black backgrounds, distinctive cat and dog faces, patterning, sizes etc.

With this information in mind, the children tried out a few ideas on large pieces of paper. They used black crayons to avoid fussiness.

When they had decided on the shapes they were happy with, they used crayons to draw their cats or dogs on white paper. They used tiny brushes and concentrated dye over their work to keep the colours strong.

They cut out their animals, keeping a thin white edge, and stuck them onto black paper.

  1. I LOVE the personality of all the different cats -- especially with cats peeking out and overlapping!! That thin white border adds a lot to the total look. I like to have kids use that technique, too!!

  2. Thanks Christie. Laurel has such a distinctive style, I thought it would be too prescriptive but I was impressed by the individuality of the children's art.
