Armature V3

9 and 10 year olds.

There is not a lot to report as yet other than the class has been very motivated. They are making figurines like Tuesdays art class started. armature-figures-v6.html

It has been a very happy day. The kids are fizzing with figurine possibilities. We continue next art day in June.

Painting the carpet design

Folding the carpet into stairs.

5 year olds. 
I read the poem "Halfway Down the Stairs", by A.A. Milne. I also showed them the You Tube of Kermits nephew, Robin, singing the poem.

They drew a classmate, who was sitting in front of them. They repeated their drawing using marker pen then Jovi crayons. They cut their little person out.

They made a long carpet design using pen and water colour paint. I tried to encourage the carpet shape to be narrower at the top. Some kids understood this idea, that the stairs look smaller at the top.

They cut out the stairs and folded them, concetina style. They assembled their art themselves, using glue sticks. I gave them a printed version of the poem to attach and they stuck their initial drawing on the back.

Armature figures V6

9 and 10 year olds.
Fortunately we have 3 full days to complete these figurines. I think many will need all that time. They are being so careful.
I stepped them through the process carefully. They drew a figure they wanted to make. They used one metre of wire, a small ball of air dry clay, masking tape, newspaper, tissue and PVA.
They need to dry now.

The Four Friends. M10

7 year olds

I based todays art day around A.A.Milne's poem, 'The Four Friends'.

Ernest was an elephant, a great big fellow,
Leonard was a lion with a six foot tail,
George was a goat, and his beard was yellow,
And James was a very small snail.

Leonard had a stall, and a great big strong one,
Earnest had a manger, and its walls were thick,
George found a pen, but I think it was the wrong one,
And James sat down on a brick

Earnest started trumpeting, and cracked his manger,
Leonard started roaring, and shivered his stall,
James gave a huffle of a snail in danger
And nobody heard him at all.

Earnest started trumpeting and raised such a rumpus,
Leonard started roaring and trying to kick,
James went on a journey with the goats new compass
And he reached the end of his brick.

Ernest was an elephant and very well intentioned,
Leonard was a lion with a brave new tail,
George was a goat, as I think I have mentioned,
but James was only a snail.

The children put pencil lines across their page and filled the page with crayon text from the poem. It didn't make sense, have spaces between words and every letter went to the top of the line. They filled in the circle letters with colour, then dyed the page. This is the background completed.
They filled a practice page with the animals from the poem. They chose one or all of them to draw in pen and colour with paint. 
They cut out and stuck their animals on a red page then an other colour. They wrote out the first verse of the poem and assembled the art.

Tall Poppies V5

The children helped one another brilliantly.

 8 and 9 year olds.

It is only a few days until our ANZAC centenary.  The children made fabric poppies using needle and thread, PVA and wool.
We hung them in our entrance foyer, using black thread. Several have come down but poppies don't live forever.

Samantha Bryan's class

A week at the Fibre Arts Conference in Whanganui. See previous post for details about the conference.
High five for the fabulous organisation.

I took Samantha Bryan's class for the week and created my own figures. She is a wonderfully gentle, thorough, talented tutor. Take a look at this You Tube of her at work.

Her accent was enough to hook me.

Samantha began the week by asking us to make 50 heads out of air dry clay. That was a little daunting. The reason for so many was a way for us to develop our own style and characters.

My heads turned into nanas. Knitting nanas. Knitting nanas at a risque call centre.
It was an intense week but very motivating and I love my result.
