Koru exploration

Koru patterns.

6 year olds.
The children have been focussing on Maori legends and the koru symbol used by Maori in their class. A great place for me to start.

We discussed the origin of the koru and what they knew about it. Of course the Air NZ symbol came up.
I asked the children to fill a page with korus that were solid. A shape that could be cut out or coloured. Difficult to do to a line. Their aim was to draw one that they could cut out of card and use as a stencil.

The stencil was used to make kawhaiwhai panels out of coloured card. This in simple terms is a strip of pattern used to decorate Maori meeting houses. I restricted the colours to traditional red, black and white. I suggested they might want to mix it up a bit by trading some of their cut out korus with other children. That was not popular!
They went on to make a second kawhaiwhai panel using paint.

Monster Day K8

New Entrants, 5 year olds.

We had a monster focus today. They told me all about monsters. They knew what they looked like, for example they sometimes have heaps of eyes, three legs, funny teeth etc.

During the day they made monsters using black crayon and water colour paint, marker pen with an overlay of tissue, and little puzzles using sticks.
They lined up 12 little sticks and I taped the back. They drew their monsters and coloured them with pencil. They will have fun putting them back together when they take the tape off at home tonight.
I anticipated chaos if they took the tape off before the end of the day.

Flip top heads. M11

7 and 8 year olds.

The idea was to have all the lovely things that swim around in our heads, spill out through the top.
The children brainstormed, pun excused, all the things that made them happy. They drew them with a continuous line to symbolise how they all connect.

The initial letters were ment as an activity to do while the photos were being taken, but it was quite a large task.

Tonal Forests V6

8 and 9 year olds.

I began the day with observational drawing of dried lavenders.
We moved on to making a tonal strip.

Then a 4 tone painting of mountains, beginning with the lightest, tallest mountains first. This was working the opposite way to the next painting.

This was painting forests, moving into the back of the forest. I found the lesson here,  The instructions are fabulous.

I bit off a lot to get the children to make these. They worked well. It was obvious in the results, who had listened closely to the instructions.

Zebras and Insects K4

5 year olds.

The children had two art projects today, both involving watercolour paint.

The children filled a page with a stripe pattern, using watercolour paint. They turned them over once they were dry and drew the different parts of the zebra on the back. Body, head, neck, legs, tail and ears. They cut them out and assembled them on black paper. Both of todays lovely ideas I found on

While the stripes were drying, the children used insect photos to draw their own insect in a circle. They used biros. They added plants around their insects. They used coloured pencil to add colour to the plants and insects and filled the background in with water colour paint.

The children had been on a picnic to the beach the previous day. They were very tired. I hadn't appreciated this until three pots of water had been spilt and noticed that their listening skills were less than perfect. But I think they did remarkably well.
