We have just experienced a trip to Stewart Island. We charted a boat plus Matt, the boat master, to discover the albatross (mollymawk) annoying our fishing endeavours.
They were actually far more entertaining and memorable than the intent, even though we caught more fish than Matt could keep up with.
The albatross were cartoon characters, with their grey eye shadow and ability to take off and land in such an amusing way.
I used this experience as motivation for a days art with the 7 year olds. They made blended crayon and dye backgrounds. The albatross were added as were the feather drawings.
I also showed the children how to make albatross in the style of a balsa wood glider. They were a surprising success for all.
