Perspective Bursts. V6











 8 and 9 year olds.
Today was very time poor. The class had "Kiwi Kicks" for 45 minutes first thing this morning. Then 14 children were taken out to do tests. BUT we still managed to make these awesome pieces. I used two different lessons. background texts and artisandesarts. Thank you Aly.

Umbrellas K2









Five year olds.

We had quite a big storm recently so the children were very aware of what the sky looked like when the weather was crazy. We began the day drawing an umbrella. The children drew it again with black crayon on a large piece of paper. Then with black pen on card which they collaged with magazine pages. This umbrella was cut out. They drew a little person who could hold the umbrella. They coloured it with coloured pencils and cut it out. The background was a wash of stormy water colours that the children tried to blend together. After the children had stuck the people and umbrellas onto the page, they put glue in the parts where they thought the rain would fall. We sprinkled glitter onto the glue.

100 day challenge.

My sister heard of the challenge at work.  100 days project. It was already underway (it started on June 7) but we decided to do it amongst ourselves.

The 100 Days Project is simple. 
Choose one creative exercise, and then repeat it every day for 100 days.
Record each daily effort and see what evolves in the work and in the self over time.

My sister is making a "patch" a day. Free form on the sewing machine. Janet is adding to a quilt each day. I am doing a sketch a day. The hardest part for me is finding something to sketch. Some days I only have a few minutes, so the subject can't be too challenging. Also the sketch book I chose has grainy paper which is limiting when it comes to fine detail.

Holiday creativity


There has been quite a build up to this creative process. The making of my daughters wedding dress. We bought the fabric together back in May with quite a clear idea of what we were going to do with it. Alice (daughter) has a 'bride dress' Pinterest board with a stack of dress ideas on it. She was after a 1950's look. It is almost the first pin she pinned. I didn't have a pattern but have thought it through for a couple of months.  Alice came to stay for the 3 days it took to make. She was a very obliging mannequin.  I made a mock up using calico. We changed several initial ideas as we went along. The sleeve length is a cap sleeve now, the skirt is gathered rather than box pleated, the darts are curved and so on. There ended up being 4 meters of fabric around the skirt. We found an excellent You Tube on how to insert an invisible zip. http://www.youtube.com She made it easier than a regular zip. I can only put sightly obscured photos up as these things are a little bit of a secret until the big day.

Dragonfly magnets and colour bursts. K2 & K6








5 year old art.
It is the last week of term and the rain is pouring down. This is not a recipe for a calm, quiet class. But the littlies made some lovely stuff.
We started on the dragonflies first. An idea I found on Pinterest by Gail at http://www.thatartistwoman.org/2012/08/dragonflies-part-1-magnets.html Many thanks. The children glued magazine text to cardboard wings they had previously cut out. They made the body by trimming little pieces off a strip of card to create a head and tail. They painted them using two colours, blending them half way down the body. They added details with markers, once it was dry. I gave them tiny plastic eyes to glue on.
The children were onto the next piece of art, by the time the wings were dry so I manned the stapler and put the wings on and a magnetic strip on the back.

The star bursts were made by groups of 5 children, each beginning on a dot on the page. I showed them how to paint one ring at a time and stopping when they met the edge or another colour burst. They chose hot or cold colours. They worked very well in groups.

Perspective drawing. V5

Check out "A faithful attempt" blog as her instructions are very straightforward. 

I used this last year with an older group of children. This group had more time. We used water colour paint in contrast to the coloured pencil we used last time. This offered more possibility to include detail. These water colour images are stronger and clearer.

Holidays Pending.

We have a two week Winter break coming up at the end of this week. I am looking forward to it very much, as I feel my programme needs refreshing. Actually, so do I. I slept through my alarm this morning. James (husband) left very early to catch a flight, so the house was extra quiet.

I have created a Pinterest board which contains an example from each post since I began blogging. I got the idea from another arty blogger. Thanks Elizabeth. http://pinterest.com/elizabethmucha/dream-painters-art/ I was finding it frustrating scrolling through dozens of blogs, looking for inspiration. I hope you find it as useful as I do.

Paint Blending M11















 6 and 7 year olds.

and I have used it before with an older group of children. 
These little guys did a stirling job. 
The children painted an A3 page with one primary colour, across into a different primary colour. This passes through a secondary colour which they created along the way. We talked about not being able to see the change in colours.  Once dry, they cut the page in half, lengthwise. They drew circles on the back of one half. They used lids and containers to draw around. These were cut out and placed on the first half. They were asked to put them on the contrasting part. They found this to be intuitive.
 They drew their origami aeroplane which they made earlier, with pen. They cut it out and added it to their paint blending picture.
