Zentangle initials

We have had a hectic few weeks. We have put on a junior and a senior school production. Each one has performed two evening shows and a matinee. It has disrupted programmes e.g. my art programme, in a big way. But definitely worth while. The performances have been spectacular.  To manage the interruptions, I have designed sessions that could be completed in half a day or a full day or anywhere in-between. It is also art that has been completed by 7 year olds through to 10 year olds.

We discussed doodling and moved on to zentangles. We watched some You Tube clips of zentangling. The children designed their own initials using fonts from magazines and library books. I encouraged fat lettering.
They divided their letter, (or letters, depending on the length of time they had in the art room) into approximately 5 parts. They began zentangling inside the sections. They bounced off one another as they invented their own versions of what they had seen on the You Tube clips.
They prepared a page with a wash of watercolour paint on it. Their letter was finally cut out and glued to the coloured back ground.
If a class had more time, they enthusiastically added to their zentangles, blocking in some areas, neatening others.
A class I had for the whole day, in addition to their large zentangle, made a small zentangle letter in pen on a piece of MDF (board) approximatly 5cm square. They coloured the background and sides of the board with strong dye using cotton buds. We added a little loop to the back so they could be hung.

Stick painting V3

8 and 9 year olds.
This is an art project we undertook a few weeks ago, but I have taken ages to get around to photographing the installation. As you'll notice, some are coming to grief.
It was a very engaging project. We loosely based the art around Aboriginal designs. The wood is driftwood from the river mouth. It has been nicely dried by the sun. I painted them all white to save time and to give the children a 'blank canvas'. The children created their designs in bands around the sticks. This way they could do as many as time would allow and still look complete.

Kites K8

5 year olds.
This is another 'calendar' project. The children have been studying flight. I borrowed a kite which I hung in the centre of the room. The children chose a place to view the kite and drew what they saw with a pencil. They put a wash of blue watercolour paint all over a page. The drawing was copied onto that page using sticks and Indian ink.  They added a little person to fly the kite. When it had dried, the colour was added using cotton buds and concentrated dye.

Bicycles M13

7 year olds.
We have been making pieces of art that will be offered to parents, with the possibility of making them into calendars, note books or cars. It is a fundraiser. The art is to be A4, landscape, no collage or glitter etc. I have been surprised at how restricting the limitations have been.

Today we made abstract art based around the strong lines and shapes of a bicycle. We focussed on the negative spaces that are created.
I gave the children 4 outlines of 4 different bikes. They were asked to crop and draw part of the bike. I asked them to be aware of the negative spaces.
They drew them onto card using marker pens, then treated each negative space with a different colour.

Weaving and Painting R9

6 year olds.

This was a very enjoyable day. 
The children began with a practice paper weaving project. This told me who could manage the "under and over" concept. I was pleasantly surprised at the number of children who managed without a problem. I supported about 3 or 4 children with their work.
I cut some large pieces of cardboard into strips, not all the way through though. I cut up a pile of fabric into strips which the children wove through their card loom. Once the wefts were in place, with minimum space between them, they secured the ends of fabric with glue.
I provided paint which the children used to embellish their work. They loved this part and had a lot of fun. 
They made their own little swing tag which they wrote their names on.

Wind Socks R8

7 year olds.
The enquiry topic in the children's class is wind power. On our harbour foreshore we have some wind sock sculptures which the children have discussed in class. We used photographs to make observational drawings of the wind socks. On heavy paper the children put a wash of blue water colour. Once it dried, they made their wind socks using ink and sticks. The colour is concentrated dye applied using cotton buds.

Pipes V2

9 and 10 year olds.

This is a very enjoyable lesson with striking results. I have taken this with younger children water pipes with water colour paint.
This time the children tried to address the issue of light coming in from one direction. Therefore they had to blend their oil pastels. They also tried to include taps, junction boxes, and thinner pipes in the background.

Lamp posts M14

8 year olds.
The class's enquiry has been around electricity. 
I took them outside to make an observational drawing of the power poles along the street. Luckily they are crazy with wires, lights road signs etc...lots to draw. 
The children prepares their page by giving it a wash of water colour paint. Their intention was to create a morning or evening sky, with colours blending together.
The children used their sketches as a guide. They drew their power poles using Indian ink and kebab sticks. 
I feel the initial drawings in pencil were so detailed and fabulous, that perhaps next time their observations are done directly in ink onto water colour washes.
