Beetles, a new species. M13

7 and 8 year olds.

The children looked at the make up of a beetle. The thorax, the abdomen, the six legs and where they join etc. With this information, they invented their own beetle, drawing only half of it on half of a page. They folded the page and held it up to the window and traced through to draw the other half.

They repeated the process on a larger piece of paper and cut it out. They used this to trace around, onto a black page. Using carbon paper would have worked too I think.

They used thin brushes and white paint to go over the lines. The colour was added using chalk. Several children tried their had at blending. They created a name for their new species.
